NexTCity
Smart Sustainable Cities Moving forward with Digital Twins
HORIZON-WIDERA-2023-ACCESS-02

About NexTCity
NexTCity strengthens NOVA IMS’s expertise in Digital Twin technologies through collaboration with KU Leuven and Universitat Jaume I. By exchanging knowledge and developing a Digital Twin for a Zero Emissions (ZER) area in Lisbon, the project contributes to Europe’s transition toward climate-neutral and resilient cities.

The challenge
European cities face increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions while adapting to the impacts of climate change. Urban areas account for more than 70% of global CO₂ emissions, making them central to the climate transition. Yet, many municipalities still rely on outdated monitoring and governance models that limit their ability to respond effectively.
To achieve the EU’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050 — and by 2030 for the Mission Cities — new approaches are needed. Cities require data-driven tools that integrate real-time information, simulate future scenarios, and support evidence-based decisions. Overcoming this challenge is at the core of the NexTCity project.

NexTCity is more than a research project; it’s an opportunity to build capacity, exchange knowledge with leading universities, and deliver practical solutions for cities striving for climate neutrality.
Events
NexTCity hosts and contributes to workshops, summer schools, and training sessions that promote collaboration and knowledge exchange in Digital Twin technologies. These events provide opportunities for researchers, students, and practitioners to develop skills, share expertise, and explore solutions for climate-neutral and resilient cities.
