Impact & expected results
The NexTCity project is designed to strengthen NOVA IMS’s expertise in city Digital Twins through collaboration with two leading European universities: KU Leuven (Belgium) and Universitat Jaume I (Spain). By exchanging knowledge, methods, and best practices, the project will raise the research and innovation capacity of NOVA IMS and contribute to Europe’s leadership in climate-smart governance.
Advancing scientific excellence
Through twinning with international partners, NexTCity will enhance NOVA IMS’s capabilities in data collection, analysis, simulation, visualization, and governance of Digital Twins for cities. This will ensure the adoption of state-of-the-art methods and standards in urban climate research.
Building a digital twin for Lisbon
The knowledge gained will be applied to the development of a Digital Twin for a Zero Emissions (ZER) area in Lisbon. This urban-scale model will integrate real-time data and predictive analytics to help design, test, and evaluate policies for climate neutrality, mobility, energy, and emissions reduction.
Supporting climate-neutral cities
By combining scientific excellence with practical applications, NexTCity will provide evidence-based tools to accelerate the transition to climate-neutral and resilient cities, contributing to the ambitions of the EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.
Long-term impact
The project will deliver a scalable and replicable Digital Twin framework that can inspire other Portuguese and European cities. It will also create a strong research network, positioning NOVA IMS as a reference point for Digital Twin innovation in urban governance.
